As part of the deal, which was announced last year, WVU Health System will invest $800 million into Independence’s five hospitals in order to install a new electronic health record and upgrade the facilities. The health systems now expect the acquisition will close in September or October, pending regulatory approval. The deal should further expand WVU Health System’s footprint in southwestern Pennsylvania and central Appalachia. WVU Health System already has a presence in the area.

It owns hospitals in Uniontown, Pennsylvania; Maryland; Ohio and West Virginia. The greater western Pennsylvania market is a competitive region for healthcare services, made attractive by the area’s proximity to Pittsburgh, which is less than an hour drive’s south from the city. The two major health networks in Pittsburgh are UPMC and Allegheny Health Network — Independence has clinical collaborations with both, according to credit ratings agency Fitch Ratings. In addition, a combination should help Independence, which has struggled in recent years. Although the system leads in market share in Butler and Clarion County, it’s struggled with staffing challenges and rising expenses.
